This project cares for 18 house bound elderly in Walmer Township. Four carers call daily on these elderly folk, taking them a cooked meal. The patients are washed, fed and cared for in their homes and when necessary are transported to the Clinic or to Livingstone hospital. With the help of a Social Worker we have managed to find Frail Care accommodation for our patients when needed.
The Ruth Centre ministers to the elderly in Walmer Township meeting in the St Augustine’s Church building in Wesleyan Street. The St John’s bus collects the members from their homes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Nomvuyo and Cordelia, run various programs for the elderly ladies and gentlemen. Different skills and craft programs are offered. Literacy and numeracy classes have been offered by students from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The once a month outings that are arranged are very popular, particularly to Happy Valley or to the beach. Our elderly take part in the Golden Games, and the ACVV Games each year for which they practice on Mondays and Fridays.
