Belonging

A Note from the Rector’s Desk…

Belonging

My predecessor, Dean Mark Derry, sent through this very helpful article by Maggie Le-Roy, the Retreats facilitator for the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. (Marks says Hi!)

It feels good to belong.
Maggie Le-Roy writes: My annual retreat was taken in Cyprus again this year. I was amazed that whilst having a silent retreat in an unfamiliar village, daily I was invited into this community. I was a stranger but felt I belonged. People sitting on their veranda invited me in for coffee or to eat lunch, they wanted to show me round their church and talked with me about life. It felt so good to belong.

Whilst the internet can give us a sense of connected-ness, particularly in pandemic times, the sense of belonging has been lost for many. The community has been fractured.

Where do I belong?
Many people, may be even you, are asking “where do I belong now?” It is a big question that many people are talking about in spiritual direction sessions around the world.

We were made to belong – look at how many people are in coffee shops! We all need community, sharing and caring together, being ourselves in a place where our souls and bodies feel welcomed and accepted.

Belonging is basic to the original God-designed normal. Koinonia – Greek for ‘community’ – is about this. Ayia Koinonia is Holy Communion – a holy belonging. Jesus formed this and showed it to communities before retreating from them.

Time out
We all need to belong although taking time out by oneself, to retreat, is helpful from time to time.

Howard Thurman said:.

“There is a persistent strain in the human spirit that rejects the experience of isolation as being alien to its genius.
It is true
that there are moments when the feeling for aloneness,
for solitariness,
must be honored
and respected…
This really means
the urgency to catch up
with one’s self,
to clear the bearings
that one’s true place in
community may be more
accurately seen and realised.”
